Madness hiding everywhere
Title: Stolen Moments.
Author: Shaded Mazoku.
Part: 1/1.
Disclaimer: Not mine at all. Thassarian, Koltira and the setting belong to Blizzard. All I own is a much neglected account and a disgruntled Sin'dorei mage.
Warnings: None.
Rating: PG-13 for bloodstained dead men without their clothes on.
Summary: A small reprieve between battles, enjoying each other's company.
Character/pairing(s): Thassarian/Koltira Deathweaver.
Fandom: World of Warcraft.
Words: 1081.
Notes: For Fluff Friday! Not really that fluffy, though. As fluffy as bitter, dead men get, I suppose.

His ears caught the sound of heavy footsteps long before the shadow fell over him. His hearing wasn't what it had been once, like most of him, but he'd had to be deaf not to hear the way metal boots rang out in the now empty halls.

Koltira didn't bother looking up.

"Hello, Thassarian," he greeted, focusing on re-wrapping Byfrost's hilt. The wrappings had come loose in his last fight, and he needed to fix it before he had to go back into combat, unless he wanted to risk dropping the large runeblade. A vampiric sword could wreck a lot of havoc it it went on control.

"Koltira," the reply came, the hollow tones of a death knight unable to hide the familiar voice entirely.

Thassarian sat down next to him, dropping his own blades at his feet. In the blue glow from his blades and the sickly green glow from Byfrost, both their armours, or what they were still wearing of it, gleam ominously.

Finishing wrapping the hilt, Koltira put his sword away and leaned back into Thassarian, closing his eyes. They no longer needed sleep, of course, and their bodies weren't bothered with exhaustion, but their minds needed rest, and it
had been too long since either of them had the chance to relax.

There was no warmth to be shared between the two of them, but Thassarian was nicely solid, a comfort Koltira would never admit he craved.

Thassarian's response was to lean into Koltira in return, supporting each other in peaceful silence.

It took Koltira unreasonably long to catch the scent of blood, even with blood running as slow as their. Death really had done his senses no favours. Injuries weren't really lethal to them, of course. It took disembodiment to even slow a death knight down. However, if injuries weren't taken care of, they were prone to frostbite and other problems.

Sighing out of habit more than any other, Koltira opened his eyes again, turning to look at Thassarian for the first time since he arrived. Like Koltira himself, he was covered in matted blood and gore from battle, though he was still wearing more of his armour. Koltira had discarded most of his as soon as he'd gotten back.

"Right," Koltira muttered, shaking his head and getting to his feet. He grabbed Byfrost with one hand and Thassarian's hand with the other, dragging the human to his feet. He allowed a moment for the man to pick up his own swords before dragging him off.

There was preciously few good things about Northrend, but one of them was the abundant hot springs.

The one he brought Thassarian to was a secluded one, with rocky outcrops shielding two sides of the area. Even with his senses dulled, Koltira had noticed Lurid following them at a distance, as the skeletal warrior often did,
and that, too, should keep uninvited people out.

Somewhat reluctantly letting go of Thassarian's hand, Koltira propped Byfrost up against the rocky outcrop and stripped out of his armour as quickly as he could. He divested himself of the light pants he wore beneath his leggings, too, still retaining some of the infamous elven vanity and wanting to show off a little.

He waded into the water and found a rock to sit on, busying himself with cleaning out his hair. Scourge guts were not something he wanted to be covered in, and it had been so long since he had the time to wash out his hair properly. The warmth of the water was wonderful, too. It was probably a little too warm to be comfortable for anyone living, but in that, at least, the dulled senses he had to deal with now was a blessing. One of these days, he'd have to take a trip to Dalaran to see if he could find some proper hair rinse, but for now, hot water was nearly as good.

Maybe the best example of what their relationship had become was that Koltira didn't even twitch as Thassarian slid his hands into his hair, even if he hadn't heard him walk up to him, distracted by the promise of soon being clean. Pleased, Koltira let his arms fall, scrubbing his chest and arms as Thassarian washed his hair for him.

It was a small gesture, but it felt great, and there was something extremely soothing about the way those large hands massaged his scalp as they worked through his mass of hair.

Had he been alive still, Koltira would probably have fallen asleep right there.

As it was, he let his eyes fall shut instead, just enjoying the touch.

Thassarian spend far longer washing his hair than what was necessary to get it clean, but they were both enjoying themselves too much to stop that soon. Koltira kept his eyes closed for the duration, head tilted backwards into the touch.

Eventually, reluctantly, Koltira moved away and turned towards Thassarian, looking at the man's arm. He had a deep cut running along the inside of his lower arm that would probably have disabled a living man.

"Idiot," Koltira muttered, somewhat annoyed.

They wore heavy plate. Injuries like those only came from carelessness. He poured some water on it from cupped hands, rubbing to clean the cut. They didn't get infections, but grit trapped under the skin was never fun.

Concentrating, green light spread from his fingers, sealing the skin closed.
His fingers lingered on Thassarian's skin afterwards, stroking his thumb along where the cut had been.

Thassarian closed his fingers around Koltira's wrist, pulling him back onto the rocks until they were pressed up together, Thassarian's now-healed arm around Koltira's waist.

"Idiot," Koltira muttered again, stealing a deep kiss. Another of the few advantages to undeath; not having to breathe. After a good while, he pulled away, leaning his head on Thassarian's shoulder and closing his eyes, wishing the rest of the world would just go away forever. All he needed was right here.

It wouldn't last, of course. There was a war on, and they weren't even on the same side. They rarely had time alone together. Soon, it was back to their respective air ships, back to battles and scourge guts and the ridiculous fights between the factions when they had bigger enemies to focus on.

But for now, they had each other's company, they had the heat and the arms around each other, and for a short while, the world was all theirs.

I don't know world of Warcraft, but this was very sweet! Poor star-crossed lovers.

World of Warcraft is usually what I do when I'm too brain-dead to do anything actually creative, but then I was playing with my new Death Knight character and there's this starter quest where they're all under the villains control and Thassarian is going all "We're all unfeeling tools of the Lich King. But go save Koltira because he's special to me!", which of course set my slasher sense tingling. Even after they rejoin the forces of good and end up on different sides, they still have a close relationship. And Thassarian was the one that killed Koltira in the first place, which appeals to my twistedness, I guess.

And then canon gives us this, and I was pretty much wanting to kick Thassarian for not asking Koltira to come with him, because then they wouldn't be at war with each other and they could go off and spend all eternity working out how undead gay sex works.

Stupid obsessions taking over my brain like that. XD

Glad you liked it! I love this pair a lot, though I find Thassarian very hard to write. But the idea came to me and didn't want to go away until I'd finished writing, so I went with the flow.

This is super adorable. I love how well you conveyed the forlornness, the coldness, of being a freed Death Knight, and especially a freed Death Knight in love... it's so sweet and so sad at the same time. Excellent-well done!
27th-Jun-2010 04:58 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I'm not very much for the fluff, so pairs like these two call to me. I'm fascinated at how their bond seems so strong despite the pretty horrible situation they're in. On the other hand, I don't think love comes easy to a Death Knight. Everything is a battle for them, the poor things.
27th-Jun-2010 05:05 pm (UTC)
I know, they're so tragic! I only recently created a DK, and playing through the starting quests these guys grabbed my attention right away. I mean, even under the Lich King's power, when supposedly you only care about Doing His Bidding and you hear his voice in your head all day, they obviously had feelings for each other. Then it was so heart-breaking to see them go their separate ways once they were free! And I think you've painted a really accurate picture of what their relationship would be like... it's wonderful that they can enjoy little moments like this, but it's still so very sad.
27th-Jun-2010 05:25 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Thassarian's little "We're uncaring tools of the Lich King, now go save my Koltira because he's special!" speech made me decide to keep an eye on those two. The way they part ways in the manga is pretty damn frustrating, because you get the feeling that Koltira was just hoping Thassarian would ask him to elope come with him. And then they end up on the gun ships, in the middle of an aerial battle that means nothing to them, since they both want the Lich King dead and don't seem to care one way or another about the factions. Must be frustrating as hell. No wonder Koltira is so angry and Thassarian just seems resigned.

And of course, there's Koltira's little "There are only two things in life that interest me..." speech in one of his later quests, and though we know one is revenge on the Lich King, the other... Well, I have my theories. *nods*
27th-Jun-2010 05:30 pm (UTC)
Thanks for posting that comic scan, BTW... I hadn't seen that. I love how Koltira's like, "Well, I could join the Alliance... if someone really wanted me to... you know... if someone... asked me to... for reals..." And that bit about "this puzzling feeling." Some staff writer knows exactly what we want.
27th-Jun-2010 05:48 pm (UTC)
The thing is, Koltira probably could have joined the Alliance fairly easily, since he was in fact a High Elf at the time of death, not a Blood Elf, no matter what the game tries to claim. But he chose to join the Horde because Thassarian is clueless, and is probably considered a Blood Elf after that for simplicity's sake. Silly Thassarian.

But yeah, they didn't exactly skimp on the subtext. I don't think Blizzard is ever going to give us a canon gay pair in lore, but they certainly don't try anything to discourage us. There's a part in the manga before the shit hits the fan which involves Thassarian and his sister talking about why he hasn't married and he's going all "when the time is right" and "I wouldn't feel right leaving a wife behind when I'm in battle". Clearly, he needs someone who can go into battle with him.
27th-Jun-2010 05:58 pm (UTC)
Oh, god, I love when gay-subtext characters have canon discussions about why they're not married or otherwise attached to someone of the opposite sex, and whoever's writing it dances all around what we can all see is the real reason XD

You know who else always seemed slashy to me? Naralex and his excessively loyal disciple in the Wailing Caverns.
27th-Jun-2010 06:17 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure Thassarian is quite aware of how gay he is for Koltira always, but I'm sure Koltira is perfectly capable of making him see reason eventually. Elves are special like that. I have this mental image of Koltira and Leryssa meeting each other and Leryssa being all "well, that explains why my brother never married..." With Thassarian being clueless as to what's going on there.

You know, I can see that one. That sort of loyalty... And for more gay, there's always Asric and Jadaar, who've been arguing like an old married couple since the Burning Crusade and show no sign of stopping.
27th-Jun-2010 06:24 pm (UTC)
I agree; elves have exceptional powers of gay :D And that's another moment I love in slashy stuff -- the "Oh, I see what's going on here" from the friend/family member of an oblivious party.

OK, I had to look up Asric and Jadaar, since I haven't encountered them in the game yet, and, wow, definitely. Couples that continually argue and insult each other are my absolute favorites :D :D
27th-Jun-2010 06:32 pm (UTC)
I can't see long-lived races as not being at least bi-curious by nature, since long lives would be pretty boring if you stuck to one thing. I mean, for a human, it's all over at around eighty years of age, while elves are barely ready to settle down by then. They just have more time to try everything. Plus, the elves, at least the Sin'dorei, are pretty hedonistic by nature.

I love those two, because they just crack me up. Plus, they hit three of my favourite things in pairings; cross-faction, interspecies and size difference. Koltira and Thassarian are my absolute favourite WoW pair, but they're not alone in being slashy.
27th-Jun-2010 06:39 pm (UTC)
Oh, I totally agree, especially about the hedonistic bit. That whole "I'm tri-sexual... I'll try anything at least once" thing seems to apply perfectly to blood elves. But, then, I tend to see everyone as at least bi-curious, because that's the way (uh-huh, uh-huh) etc.

I love cross-faction and interspecies relationships too. I have a tendency to pair up my own toons like that, and NPCs that fall into those categories are just as awesome, especially when they're gay (though I'm all about the Thrall/Jaina too).
27th-Jun-2010 06:49 pm (UTC)
I can see the blood elves having Roman style giant orgies with no problem. Silvermoon was made for that sort of thing. I think there'd be a lot of culture shock for a human/elf pair, but that makes it all so much more interesting.

My main is a blood elf mage with a serious gay crush on Tirion Fordring of all people. *snicker* Among other people, that is. I do love it when the NPCs give me something that would make an interesting relationship to read about. And I'm always in favour of Thrall/Jaina, and not just because I love Thrall to bits. I might prefer gay pairings, but there are some really good het ones too.
27th-Jun-2010 06:58 pm (UTC)
Thrall is so awesome. The very first time I talked to him with my very first character at level 11 or whatever she was, I got all starry-eyed at the default greeting he gives. If she weren't so lesbian, she'd probably have a total crush on him; as it is, I leave him to Jaina XD
27th-Jun-2010 07:02 pm (UTC)
Seriously, they should just let Thrall run Azeroth. It'd be a much better place. Him and Jaina. Then Azeroth would become a beautiful place of little half-breed babies and inter-faction loving. *nods*
28th-Jun-2010 03:34 am (UTC)
Awesome. I love these two, and they deserve a good cuddle after maiming and killing things, before they're stuck dealing with the morons in Icecrown. Very nice.
28th-Jun-2010 07:42 am (UTC)
They are, without a doubt, my favourite WoW pair. I have a lot of other pairings I adore, too, but these two are on the top of the list. And they deserve some time alone together, with all the mess they have to deal with in Northrend. I'd say they deserve to be happy, but I think they need some time to actually remember what it's like being happy first.
28th-Jun-2010 04:28 am (UTC)
This was so lovely ♥

I adore me some good T/K and this was excellent :)
28th-Jun-2010 07:43 am (UTC)
Thank you! I'm going through an obsession with this pair right now, and their dynamic is a lot of fun to write.
28th-Jun-2010 01:57 pm (UTC)
This was a glorious fic. :D It was a pleasure to read. And yes, the Thassarian quest in the DK starting area sent my slasher sense tingling too. XD

Thank you for writing this! And I now require at least reading that manga more in depth...
28th-Jun-2010 07:15 pm (UTC)
Thank you very much! Honestly, the way that quest was set up seems almost intended to draw in the slash fans. Not that I'm complaining at all.
28th-Jun-2010 07:50 pm (UTC)
Hey, you can't appeal to the dominant demographic all the time. ;) Now I need to find more fics of these two...have you happened to write any more of them? Or perhaps can point me to worthwhile fics? I'm too lazy to sift through ff.net and other sites on my own :P
28th-Jun-2010 08:23 pm (UTC)
I haven't written more yet, though seeing as Koltira has apparently eaten my brain, I probably will.

There aren't really that much fic of this pairing out there, which is a shame. *points up* the__ivorytower wrote Brothers-at-Arms, which is a favourite of mine, though.
28th-Jun-2010 03:06 pm (UTC)
have to say thassarian is prob my favorite wow character. i've played through 80 on both sides and paid special attention to both thassarian's and koltira's quests. *swoon*
btw which manga is that you posted the pic from?
28th-Jun-2010 07:16 pm (UTC)
I still haven't done Thassarian's quests, since my highest level Alliance toon is 45, but I've certainly read up on them and I can't wait to do them. I love both these two so much!

The manga is called Death Knight, and is Thassarian's story, and it's in Blizzard's line of class manga. It's quite good and has some nice moments in it.
29th-Jun-2010 06:28 pm (UTC)
thanks!
ooh, you're in for a treat. i'd say they did a much better job with thassarian's questline than koltira's. tho if you pay attention, you certainly hear koltira's pain... he seems a lot more bitter than thassarian over their fate.
hmm, now i'm trying to think of a way to work em into my silly 45k word fic...
29th-Jun-2010 07:03 pm (UTC)
It'll still be a while before I get to play those quests, I fear. I don't have much free time to play. But yeah, Koltira seems far more bitter and angry than Thassarian. He seems so wounded, while Thassarian just seems resigned and focused.

*snicker* Koltira is like dark chocolate, I guess. Bitter, dark and probably bad for you, but ultimately worth it.

He's a little special sometimes, I think. Guess he has to entertain himself somehow on that airship, before he starts booting people off of it.
